For our first field trip of 2024, Place Collective UK visited Barking, East London. Be First’s, David Harley and local partners walked us through a comprehensive tour of Barking's regeneration, from energy centres to town centre residential, alongside flagship workspace and cultural schemes. We got to understand the vision of the area against a backdrop of high deprivation and population growth along with fascinating insights into local cultural and heritage aspects. Leeds

Leeds, a fast-changing and happening regional hub, is attracting transformational investment to drive its net zero agenda and objectives of sustainable economic growth, and innovation. There is a marked push for traffic-free areas and sustainable active travel modes. In one packed afternoon, we were fortunate to visit three significant ongoing projects that are transforming vast areas south of River Aire, of which many have a glorious industrial past. The tour bookended with a visit to the iconic Leeds Corn Exchange to see how a major recently completed public realm project contributed to a renewed vibrancy of this important central site.

Placemaking Collective UK’s visit to Glasgow in October 2022  was a first for several reasons. It was our first visit to Scotland and the first time we ran a field trip over two days. An afternoon simply wouldn’t have done the city justice. All of our hosts offered fascinating insights into the future of the city and gave our intrepid group, who braved all the elements – from torrential rain to sunny skies –a front-row seat to Glasgow’s ongoing transformations.

PCUK’S Liverpool walkabout was packed with living history, ambition, ‘sticky streets’, best practice and regrets, plus loads of inspiring people and projects. Much of the trouble the city is recovering from stemmed from a 1990s decline that hollowed the city economically and physically, resulting among other things in an anomalous chunk of low-density housing near the waterfront.
